Making the subsurface a lever for the energy transition and decarbonisation

As the energy transition gathers pace, the subsurface is emerging as a key lever to support the decarbonisation of energy systems. It is a source of energy derived from geothermal energy, heat storage and natural hydrogen, and is also able to store CO2, synthetic hydrogen and radioactive waste. This versatility makes it a key component of the future low-carbon energy mix, complementing other renewable energy sources as part of the ambitions set out by the EU in the Net-Zero Industry Act. BRGM is drawing on its scientific and technological expertise in this field to explore, characterise and develop the potential of the subsurface. Through its research and development work, BRGM is supporting local communities in designing viable and reliable solutions with low environmental impact, for a sustainable energy transition.
