Protecting groundwater in the face of climate change

Climate change and the growing demand for water for various purposes are putting increasing pressure on groundwater resources. In France, the prospect of global warming by up to +4°C by the end of the century could profoundly alter the water cycle and the behaviour of groundwater bodies, leading to an increased risk of conflicts over water use between sectors, between regions, and even internationally. In response to this major challenge, BRGM provides support for public policies on sustainable water management in all regions. BRGM research aims to gain a better understanding of the resilience of aquifers to the effects of climate change and human pressures, while evaluating innovative, and particularly nature-based solutions to ensure the long‑term conservation of this vital resource.
